In the summer of 1502 in Guanaja (Honduras), Columbus first encountered cacao on a Mayan trading canoe. His second son Ferdinand wrote in his memoir:

But contrary to popular belief, if was NOT thanks to him that cacao made it to Europe 🍫🌎🙅‍♀️ In the summer of 1502 in Guanaja (Honduras), Columbus first encountered cacao on a Mayan trading canoe. His second son Ferdinand wrote in his memoir: "For their provisions, they had such roots and grains......and many of those almonds which in New Spain [Mexico] are used for money. They seemed to hold these almonds at a great price; for when they were brought on board ship together with their goods, I observed that when any of these almonds fell, they all stopped to pick it up, as if any eye had fallen." Lacking an interpreter, Columbus had no way of knowing that these "almonds" were used to manufacture the New World's most esteemed beverage. He never tasted chocolate and died 4 years later in Spain. The discovery of the delicious wealth of the Indies was to be made by others.
