Top 5 Tips for Displaying Chocolate Bars
We spend our time finding and championing the best bean-to-bar chocolate in the world. That means we also spend a lot of time thinking about what makes a bar get chosen once it’s on a shelf. Based on our decades of experience, here are our top tips for getting the most from your shelf space…
Face the wrapper, always.
Sounds obvious, but it’s the single most common failure point on a chocolate shelf – bars turned spine-out or stacked so only the top one reads. A wrapper is doing the job of a label, a story, and a bit of theatre all at once. If it’s not facing out, none of that work is being seen.
Group by something that’s helpful for customers
Brand is the default, but it’s not always the most useful axis. Origin, percentage, or inclusion type (plain, salt, fruit) often make more sense to someone standing there deciding what they feel like. A shelf organised by “if you liked this, try this” does more selling than one organised by the maker.
Keep key details legible at a glance
Bars are small and shelves are crowded, so whatever helps someone scan quickly – percentage, origin, a one-line flavour cue – earns its place. A shelf-talker calling out “fruity and light” versus “deep and intense,” or bars grouped so the percentage climbs left to right, does more work than a customer squinting at fine print on a wrapper. The goal isn’t more information, it’s less friction between seeing and deciding.
Rotate stock forward and keep an eye on light and heat
Bars are shelf-stable compared to filled or fresh chocolate, which makes it easy to leave them sitting for months. Bloom doesn’t care that a bar is “stable” – direct sun, heat near a till or window, or six months of dust will still show. Front-facing and rotating stock isn’t just tidiness, it protects the quality and eating experience.
Guide choices with points of discovery
A tasting notes card, a “staff pick,” or one bar cut open and displayed alongside its wrapper – all this gives people a reason to stop rather than scan past. Bars don’t have the over visual appeal of a bonbon case, so a small pointer or something to catch the eye can help highlight the stock you want to move.
